On PRAYER
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF LORD’S PRAYER
Just after saying how we should not be like when praying in
verse 5- in chapter 6 of Matthew (THE MODEL PRAYER) Jesus said
5 “And when you pray, you shall not be like the
hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners
of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they
have their reward.
6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you
have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your
Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the
heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.
8 “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows
the things you have need of before you ask Him.
9 In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power
and the glory forever. Amen.
We ought to pray in the same manner.
First we have to glorify the name of the Father in heaven
and to seek his kingdom
(Matthew 6:33 (NIV) But seek first his kingdom and his
righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well).
(Matthew 11:25 NIV- At that time Jesus said, "I
praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these
things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.)

Raises Lazarus From the Dead
John
11:41-42 NIV - Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you
that you have heard me.
42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for
the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent
me.”
To do as according to his will
(Matthew 26:39 NIV - Going a little farther, he fell
with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may
this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.")
To be like Jesus
(Matthew 11:29 NIV - Take my yoke upon you and learn
from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your
souls.)
(Phil 2:6 KJV- Who, being in the form of God, thought
it not robbery to be equal with God)
(Hebrews 4:15 NLT - This High Priest of ours
understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he
did not sin.)
Not to fall into temptations
(Mat 26:41 NIV -"Watch and pray so that you will
not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.")
(1 Cor 10:13 NIV - No temptation has overtaken you
except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be
tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also
provide a way out so that you can endure it.)
To get the help from the Holy Spirit
(John 14:26 ESV - But the Helper, the Holy Spirit,
whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to
your remembrance all that I have said to you.)
(Galatians 5:22-23 ESV - But the fruit of the Spirit
is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,
self-control; against such things there is no law.)
(Romans 8:26 ESV - Likewise the Spirit helps us in our
weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit
himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.)
(John 14:15-17 ESV - “If you love me, you will keep my
commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper,
to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot
receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells
with you and will be in you.)
(John 16:12-15 ESV - “I still have many things to say
to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will
guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but
whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are
to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to
you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what
is mine and declare it to you.)
Matthew 26:36-56
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called
Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and
pray.”
37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of
Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled.
38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful,
even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” 39 And going a little farther
he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this
cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”
40 And he came to the disciples and found them
sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour?
41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into
temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
42 Again, for the second time, he went away and
prayed,
“My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.”
43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for
their eyes were heavy.
44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for
the third time, saying the same words again.
45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them,
“Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of
Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at
hand.”
Psalm 5 (1-3)
David approaches God.
Give ear to my words, O LORD,
Consider my meditation.
Give heed to the voice of my cry,
My King and my God,
For to You I will pray.
My voice You shall hear in the morning, O LORD;
In the morning I will direct it to You,
And I will look up.
Nehemiah 1
New International Version (NIV)
Nehemiah’s Prayer
1 The words of Nehemiah son of Hakaliah:
In the month of Kislev in the twentieth year, while I
was in the citadel of Susa,
2 Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with
some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that had
survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.
3 They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and
are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of
Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.”
4 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For
some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.
5 Then I said: “Lord, the God of heaven, the great and
awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep
his commandments,
6 let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear
the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants,
the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my
father’s family, have committed against you.
7 We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not
obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.
8 “Remember the instruction you gave your servant
Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations,
9 but if you return to me and obey my commands, then
even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from
there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’
10 “They are your servants and your people, whom you
redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand.
11 Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of
this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering
your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the
presence of this man.”
I was cupbearer to the king.
The Prayer of Jabez
1 Chronicles 4:9-10
"Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers,
and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, 'Because I bore him in pain.' And
Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, 'Oh, that You would bless me indeed,
and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would
keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain.' So God granted him what he
requested"
Prayer of a righteous man
James 5:16-17
King James Version (KJV)
16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one
for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous
man availeth much.
17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed
earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and
a half years.
Matthew 18:20 - NIV
For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them."
Philippians 1:3-11

Thanksgiving and Prayer
3 I thank my God every time I remember you.
4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with
joy
5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the
first day until now,
6 being confident of this, that he who began a good
work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of
you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and
confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me.
8 God can testify how I long for all of you with the
affection of Christ Jesus.
9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound
more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,
10 so that you may be able to
discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,
11
filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the
glory and praise of God.
Have a Great, Prayed and Blessed Day Ahead.
