Meditating the Word of God and the Work Of Spirit

We wonder if we will be able to overcome the problems of life through our wisdom and strength. But two things are most important in overcoming the problems of life.

1) Meditating the Word of God in our hearts.
2) Walking in Spirit or Allowing the Spirit to work in us.

These two aspects can be learnt from our Lord Jesus Christ himself. From the beginning, when he was 12 years old. The Bible says in Luke that he grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

Luke 2:52 NIV
And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

Jesus demonstrated this when he was tempted in the wilderness.

Matthew 4:1-11(NASB)

The Temptation of Jesus

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He [a]then became hungry. And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”
Then the devil *took Him into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and *said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written,
He will command His angels concerning You’;
and
On their hands they will bear You up,
So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”
Jesus said to him, [b]On the other hand, it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
Again, the devil *took Him to a very high mountain and *showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; and he said to Him, “All these things I will give You, if You fall down and [c]worship me.” 10 Then Jesus *said to him,“Go, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and [d]serve Him only.’” 11 Then the devil *left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him.

1) Meditating the Word of God in our hearts.

The Jews and many others by-heart the scripture, this is not meditation. Because knowing the scripture is one part, but following it and through the Grace of God - Living through it as a testimony is the greatest challenge.

James 2:14-26(NASB)

Faith and Works

14 What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can [a]that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, [b]be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for theirbody, what use is that? 17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is [c]dead, being by itself.
18 But someone [d]may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” 19 You believe that [e]God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.20 But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? 22 You see that faith was working with his works, and [f]as a result of the works, faith was [g]perfected; 23 and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God. 24 You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 In the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

2) Walking in Spirit or Allowing the Spirit to work in us.

1 Corinthians 6:19 NIV
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;

Galatians 5 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Walk by the Spirit

[a]It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you. And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law. You have been severed from Christ, you who [b]are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. For we [c]through the Spirit, [d]by faith, are waiting for the hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love.
You were running well; who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion did not come from Him who calls you. A little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough. 10 I have confidence [e]in you in the Lord that you will adopt no other view; but the one who is disturbing you will bear his judgment, whoever he is. 11 But I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why am I stillpersecuted? Then the stumbling block of the cross has been abolished. 12 I wish that those who are troubling you would even [f]mutilate themselves.
13 For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another.
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh [g]sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you [h]please. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. 19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are:[i]immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, [j]factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 Now those who [k]belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also [l]walk by the Spirit. 26 Let us not becomeboastful, challenging one another, envying one another.

Great Fishermen - Fisher of Men

When Jesus calls his First Disciples, he did not say come I will make you great men in you profession, Indeed he said the opposite. The first disciples Peter and Andrew were called to be Fishers of men. Their occupation was to catch fish, but being Fishers of men is to be able to save them to the last, to preach the Gospel to the ungodly, to be wise Godly and to understand the nature of God and to make people understand through their faith.

Peter and Andrew left their nets immediately and followed him, this is a great act of faith. Jesus knew the weakness of Peter, that he could deny him, he could ask Jesus to be king of Israel. But Jesus though rebuked Peter, he gave great power and strength at the later days. When Peter was at Pentecost he boldly spoke before men, when he was entering the temple at the ninth hour for prayer - God helped Peter to heal a Lame Man. (Acts 3 - A Lame Man Healed).

Fisher of Men is being a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Matthew 4:18-20English Standard Version (ESV)

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”[a] 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
