FIRST THINGS FIRST
In Matthew 6:33 Jesus says 33 " But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
Just after saying not to worry about tomorrow, Jesus says to seek the kingdom of God First.
Just
after Many Healed in the Evening in Matthew chapter 8 verse 16, there is this verse for
The Cost of Discipleship in verse 18-22,
18 And when Jesus saw great
multitudes about Him, He gave a command to depart to the other side.
19 Then a certain scribe
came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.”
20 And Jesus said to him,
“Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has
nowhere to lay His head.”
21 Then another of His
disciples said to Him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”
22 But Jesus said to him,
“Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”
Jesus
response to the disciples sounds little harsh, but he wanted to say that, First
thing to do is to follow him. In fact when Adam hide himself in the Garden of
Eden, the relationship between God and Humans got lost through the form of disobedience
which lead to death - Death means the separation from God.
Many of
our prayers are unanswered, because we may not be giving the First importance
to God. When we start giving God the First preference our prayers will be
answered for sure.
John 14:13-14 13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the
Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If ye shall ask any thing
in my name, I will do it..
In the old testament there is this story of Cain and Abel. God accepts the offerings of Abel, because it is Firstborn of his flock.
Genesis 4:1-26
King James Version (KJV)
4 And Adam knew Eve his
wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the
Lord.
2 And she again bare his
brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the
ground.
3 And in process of time it
came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the
Lord.
4 And Abel, he also brought
of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect
unto Abel and to his offering:
5 But unto Cain and
to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his
countenance fell.
In fact
Jesus said in Matthew chapter 5
23 Therefore if thou bring
thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought
against thee;
24 Leave there thy gift
before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then
come and offer thy gift.
Even in The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard
Matthew 20:1-16
King James Version (KJV)
1
For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went
out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.
2
And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into
his vineyard.
3
And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the
marketplace,
4
And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I
will give you. And they went their way.
5
Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.
6
And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and
saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?
7
They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also
into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.
8
So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call
the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the
first.
9
And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every
man a penny.
10
But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received
more; and they likewise received every man a penny.
11
And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,
12
Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal
unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.
13
But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not
thou agree with me for a penny?
14
Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto
thee.
15
Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil,
because I am good?
16
So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be
called, but few chosen.
