Matthew 12
New King James Version (NKJV)
New King James Version (NKJV)
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
12 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. And His disciples were hungry, and began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. 2 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath!”
3 But He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God and ate the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? 5 Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless? 6 Yet I say to you that in this place there is One greater than the temple. 7 But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
Jesus teaches us that he is the Lord of Sabbath:
Jesus did many a miracles on Sabbath to teach us lessons, that Jesus is the Lord of Sabbath, When Jesus was questioned about the authority -
John 5:17 KJV
But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
As it is said in - Isaiah 55:8 NIV
"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD.
Jesus gives us two examples of what is important to follow -
“Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God and ate the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests?
Jesus takes a stand here by giving example of David, who is considered to be a great prophet, So that people could not ask him anything against him and they will learn the lesson.
Jesus gives the second example of the Priests in the temple -
Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless?
People may reject these two examples and that is why Jesus finally says - Yet I say to you that in this place there is One greater than the temple.
Christ is the head of the Church:
Colossians 1:18 NIV
And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.
God desire mercy and not sacrifice:
‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
Hosea 6:6 NIV
For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.
Jesus teaches us that he is the Lord of Sabbath, His thoughts are different from ours. He delights in mercy, in understanding him and following in his footsteps, believing and trusting in him. To know that he came not to destroy the law but to fulfill. He listens to our prayers and answers if we ask him humbly and without doubt. He is always on the side of the righteous, but yet he came not only to save the righteous, but the sinners. He came so that no one should perish but to have eternal life through him.

Psalm 51:16-17
New King James Version (NKJV)
16 For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it;
You do not delight in burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit,
A broken and a contrite heart—
These, O God, You will not despise.
