How can we make India Clean

The need  and purpose for a "Clean India".

Insights from Vishal Mangalwadi's speech on the same.

It has just been a while we have celebrated "Gandhi Jayanti" on October 2nd. But in Patna it has been a very bad day, Because of the floods. Every time people use to blame the nature as saying "Its a natural disaster", but in this case they blame "Infrastructure drainage management".

It is estimated that 22,900 million litres per day (MLD) of domestic wastewater is
generated from urban centres against 13,500 MLD industrial wastewater. The
treatment capacity available for domestic wastewater is only for 5,900 MLD, against
8,000 MLD of industrial wastewater. Thus, there is a big gap in treatment of domestic
wastewater.

It is not long ago a similar situation happened in Chennai, and the reason is not "a natural disaster".

Chennai floods are not a natural disaster—they’ve been created by greedy town planners and dumb engineers

India is great country with amazing talents, smart people. But, what does it take to make India, A Clean Country with clean city and states? Is smart cities really smart?

Wonder what would happen if such situation happens in cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad etc..

Even before we try to understand why we need a Clean India, let us try to understand the aspect of "Cleanliness". Why Should we be clean? what is clean mean any way?

Since the Human Being started living on this planet earth, hygiene is given much preference. Because even life expectancy, healthy and prone to disease etc are affected by the hygiene factors. But, still we find so many countries and people doesn't take this to be the most important aspect of life. Cleanliness - in terms of outer/physical purification it self is not taken into much importance, then how about the spiritual aspect of "Being Holy", "Pure" will be considered?

Let us take a look at some of the philosophical aspects of "Cleanliness" in some of the worldviews. In Hinduism, we are living in "Kali Yuga".

Kali Yuga (kalyug) – “Age of Vice” ... 1) Satya Yuga – In Hinduism, is the “Yuga (Age or Era) of Truth”, when mankind is governed by gods, and every manifestation or work is close to the purest ideal and mankind will allow intrinsic goodness to rule supreme.

Also, the concept of Non-Duelist nature. Non-Dualism also called non-duality, means "not two" or "one undivided without a second". Nondualism primarily refers to a mature state of consciousness, in which the dichotomy of I-other is "transcended", and awareness is described as "centerless" and "without dichotomies".

Dr. Vishal Mangalwadi's Video on this matter explains it clearly.

"Everything is God and Enlightenment is becoming one with God".

But, the Idea of Clean India is a long time plan and thought, from the time of Gandhi to Nehru and then Congress party and through out the building the modern India, but it is considerably failed. Why?

There are many aspects to the failure of making India a "Clean India". But, before looking into the aspects of failure, lets look at some of the factors that led 'The Father of our Nation" - Mahatma Gandhi to inspire to have a "Clean India".

Unto this Last with 1 Disc
Gandhi was inspired by John Ruskin's Unto This Last
Unto This Last had a very important impact on Gandhi's philosophy. He discovered the book in March 1904 through Henry Polak, whom he had met in a vegetarian restaurant in South Africa. Polak was sub-editor of the Johannesburg paper The Critic. Gandhi decided immediately not only to change his own life according to Ruskin's teaching, but also to publish his own newspaper, Indian Opinion, from a farm where everybody would get the same salary, without distinction of function, race, or nationality. This, for that time, was quite revolutionary. Thus Gandhi created Phoenix Settlement.

We do Have a Movie "The Least of These", but this book is based on the Biblical Principle of Equality and Non- violence from which Gandhi was inspired and publish his own newspaper, Indian Opinion from a farm where everybody would get the same salary, without distinction of function, race, or nationality. The Book itself is from the Bible verses of Matthew 20:13 and Zechariah 11:12 respectively (in the King James Version):

The name comes from the Parable of the Vineyard in the New Testament, where Christ says “take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last even as unto thee.” Ruskin was deeply concerned about the plight of the working class of his time, who suffered under the harsh conditions of the Industrial Revolution.

Mohandas Gandhi translated Unto This Last into Gujarati in 1908 under the title of Sarvodaya (Well Being of All). Valji Govindji Desai translated it back to English in 1951 under the title of Unto This Last: A Paraphrase. This last essay can be considered his program on economics, as in Unto This Last, Gandhi found an important part of his social and economic ideas.

No wonder that Gandhi was inspired from the Bible, that he was able to be an inspiration to the West:
Mahatma Gandhi inspired people all over the world, including one of the United States' most famous civil rights leaders, Martin Luther King Jr. ... Gandhi referred to his form of nonviolence as satyagraha, meaning “truth-force” or “love-force.”

The Problem of Culture, Caste and mainly Religion:
The Indian idea of the society is exactly opposite to the Gospel's idea of society. It is not "Love your neighbor, but if your neighbor is a low caste then it is "Hate your neighbor", "Do not touch your neighbor", "Do not treat like yourself", etc...

Allan Octavian Hume's Letter
There were agrarian riots in the Deccan and Bombay, and Hume suggested that an Indian Union would be a good safety valve and outlet to avoid further unrest. On 1 March 1883 he wrote a letter to the graduates of the University of Calcutta:[29]
If only fifty men, good and true, can be found to join as founders, the thing can be established and the further development will be comparatively easy. ...
And if even the leaders of thought are all either such poor creatures, or so selfishly wedded to personal concerns that they dare not strike a blow for their country's sake, then justly and rightly are they kept down and trampled on, for they deserve nothing better. Every nation secures precisely as good a Government as it merits. If you the picked men, the most highly educated of the nation, cannot, scorning personal ease and selfish objects, make a resolute struggle to secure greater freedom for yourselves and your country, a more impartial administration, a larger share in the management of your own affairs, then we, your friends, are wrong and our adversaries right, then are Lord Ripon's noble aspirations for your good fruitless and visionary, then, at present at any rate all hopes of progress are at an end and India truly neither desires nor deserves any better Government than she enjoys. Only, if this be so, let us hear no more factious, peevish complaints that you are kept in leading strings and treated like children, for you will have proved yourself such. Men know how to act. Let there be no more complaining of Englishmen being preferred to you in all important offices, for if you lack that public spirit, that highest form of altruistic devotion that leads men to subordinate private ease to the public weal – that patriotism that has made Englishmen what they are – then rightly are these preferred to you, rightly and inevitably have they become your rulers. And rulers and task-masters they must continue, let the yoke gall your shoulders never so sorely, until you realise and stand prepared to act upon the eternal truth that self-sacrifice and unselfishness are the only unfailing guides to freedom and happiness.

Sanitation is my birthright: Mulk Raj Anand and the enduring romance of the flush toilet:
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/blogs/toi-edit-page/sanitation-is-my-birthright-mulk-raj-anand-and-the-enduring-romance-of-the-flush-toilet/

Mulk Raj Anand and many others was able to analyse the problem and tried to solve it physically by using the modern technology and other tools. But, since the problem is spiritual, philosophical and cultural. It has to be dealt with such aspects.

Rabindranath Tagore is someone who had the insight to the problem, the problem of sin, the problem of inner uncleanliness. Rabindranath Tagore in his little three act play entitled CHANDALIKA, in which he tries to relate Jesus as a Buddhist monk and the Women at the Well as the low caste women.

John 4 New International Version (NIV)

So, where do we go to find the solution? Where else other than "The Bible". The concept of "Holiness", "Purity" and "Cleanliness" all comes from the Bible. God told Moses, Exodus 3:5 "Do not come any closer," God said. "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground."

God Told Moses to keep the Camps Clean
Deuteronomy 23:14 Contemporary English Version (CEV)
14 You must keep your camp clean of filthy and disgusting things. The Lord is always present in your camp, ready to rescue you and give you victory over your enemies. But if he sees something disgusting in your camp, he may turn around and leave.

God says, "Be Holy as I am Holy"
Leviticus 11:44-45 New International Version (NIV)
44 I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground. 45 I am the Lord, who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.

In short, the major problems for not been able to make India a "Clean India" are:
1. Worldviews
2. Culture
3. Caste
4. Philosophy
5. Religion

Understanding the Importance of "Truth" and "Freedom".

There are deeper Philosophical issues for the concept for cleanliness and it is not only working on cleaning the physical aspects that alone matters, but a spiritual cleansing.

The Bible always directs to the Holy God.

Revelation 4
Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come." "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being."

There are numerous documents and facts that proves that Bible has built great Nations and Cities, its not only the Physical aspect of cleanliness but also the Spiritual aspect that Bible speaks about.

In his book, Building Jerusalem
Book by Tristram Hunt
chronicles how British society responded to the crisis. "Building Jerusalem" is an intellectual history of the ideas that transformed squalor-bound urban areas into a new organizational model based on civic pride and public works.

The eschatological concept of the Bible:
Christian eschatology is the study concerned with the ultimate destiny of the individual soul and the entire created order, based primarily upon biblical texts within the Old and New Testament.

The basic difference with the promises of the Old Testament is that in Revelation they also have an ontological value (Rev. 21:1;4: "Then I saw 'a new heaven and a new earth,' for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea...'He will wipe every tear from their eyes.

Let God Bless our Country India and make it Clean
