Parables of Jesus - The Budding Fig Tree

The Budding Fig Tree

Matthew 24:32-35

King James Version (KJV)
32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:
33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

Luke 21:29-33

King James Version (KJV)
29 And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees;
30 When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand.
31 So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.
32 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.
33 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

This parable is told when Jesus was telling about The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times. Though we doesn't know the hour of the end time(Matthew 24:36 NIV ("But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.) we should be aware of it and be ready for it. 2 Peter 3:14 NIV
So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.

In the parable Jesus tells about the season, when there is summer there is the growth of leaves in the fig tree. In the same manner, these are the times when we have to understand God works mysteriously - Job 11:7 "Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty?. Jesus is the Wisdom of God -  1 Corinthians 1:30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God--that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.

God always wants us to be happy. His only objective is to give us eternal life. So he did all the things possible from his side. We are here just to know that, he made it very simple by sending his only Son - Jesus. He wants us to understand that he cares for us, that he wanted to make sure that we discern the time and act accordingly, to be found blameless at his appearance.

Colossians 2:2-3
My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ,  in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Parables of Jesus - Parable of the great banquet

Parable of the great banquet

Matthew 22:1-14

King James Version (KJV)
22 And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said,
The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,
And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.
Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.
But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:
And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.
But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.
Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.
Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.
10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.
11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:
12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.
13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

Luke 14:15-24

King James Version (KJV)

15 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:
17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.
18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.
19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.
20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.
22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

In this parable, Jesus gives us an example of a great banquet. People were called to participate as it was prepared for them - John 14:2 KJV In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you., but they took it lightly - Matthew 22: But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise: and also at the end people who were not invited or people found without the wedding garment were also cast into outer darkness - Matthew 22: 12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.
13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

God knows the end from the beginning, Isaiah 46:10 NIV I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, 'My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.' and when he says - John 10:10 - "I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." - The only thing he wants us to understand is his will for our life. But we look at the outward appearances, the materialistic gain and the cares of the world - That is what the parable says when - in the 5th verse - But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:

It is very important to know the will of God for our lives, and to work according to his plans - Proverbs 16:3 NIV - Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.

Parables of Jesus - Parable of the Wicked Husbandmen

Parable of the Wicked Husbandmen

Matthew 21:33-41

King James Version (KJV)
33 Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country:
34 And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it.
35 And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.
36 Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise.
37 But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.
38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance.
39 And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.
40 When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen?
41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.

Mark 12:1-9

King James Version (KJV)
12 And he began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and digged a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country.
And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.
And they caught him, and beat him, and sent him away empty.
And again he sent unto them another servant; and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully handled.
And again he sent another; and him they killed, and many others; beating some, and killing some.
Having yet therefore one son, his wellbeloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son.
But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours.'
And they took him, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.
What shall therefore the lord of the vineyard do? he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others.

Luke 20:9-16

King James Version (KJV)
Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.
10 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty.
11 And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.
12 And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.
13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.
14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.
15 So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?
16 He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.

The parable of the Wicked Husbandmen is one of the parable, where Jesus says about himself, about his mission.

Firstly the parable starts with the creation and God's will for man:
God created man in his own image and gave all the authority to rule over all the other creatures. But also God gave an exception - Not to eat the fruit of knowledge. Genesis 2:17 ASV but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. But man refused God's command and he sinned against God. He did sin after that, Building the tower of babel. Man's heart was wicked -  Genesis 6:5 NIV The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.

God sent many prophets to warn human kind, to know God and to do according to God's will. But mankind will not listen, he then sent many prophets, among many nations and many kind of people. They not only refused to accept God, they denied and rebelled against God. Finally God sent his only Son, whom also they killed.

Mark 12:7-8
"But the farmers said to each other, 'This is the owner's son. This vineyard will be his. If we kill him, then it will be ours.' So the farmers took the son, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him." (ERV)

The parable starts by saying that there was a man who planted vineyard and gave it as a custody to the husbandmen (Tenants) and he went to a far country. At a certain time he sent his servants to get the fruits from the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him empty, again and again the owner sent his servants, but every time the tenants beat the servants and finally they killed the servants. So the owner thought, If I send my Son, they may respect and give him the fruit. He sent his Son, but the Luke 20:14 -husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. 15 So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him.

The parable ends by saying as to what the owner will do now?
will he not kill the tenants? will he not bring judgment to the wickedness of the tenants. Yes he will - Luke 206 He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.

Jesus ends the parable by saying: Matthew 21:42-46
42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:
“‘The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone;
the Lord has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?
43 “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. 44 Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”
45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus’ parables, they knew he was talking about them. 46 They looked for a way to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd because the people held that he was a prophet.

Parables of Jesus - Parable of the Two Sons - Matthew 21:28-32

Parable of the Two Sons

Matthew 21:28-32

King James Version (KJV)
28 But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.
29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.
30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.
31 Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.
32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.

This parable is to teach a lesson for all those who think they are the religious and righteous people. But God says even the publicans and harlots who believed in him and choose God will be accepted.

The parable states about the two sons: The first son says he will not go to vineyard, but then he changes his mind (Thinks to do as per the will of father) and goes to work in vineyard. The second son says he will go and he does not.

God does not see the way man sees. When Abraham was asked to sacrifice in mount Moriah. It did not happen as the way as our thinking, but a sacrifice did happen in God's way, a ram was caught in some nearby bushes and Abraham sacrifices the ram instead of Isaac. When Jesus healed the sick on Sabbath or when he dine with pharisee or when he sits with sinners. Many questioned why should he do all these things? he should be there only with Godly and Righteous people, But Jesus' answer was Mark 2:17 NIV - "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man

Mark 2:10-12

New International Version (NIV)
10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

One of the greatest achievement of Jesus is fulfilling the will of the Father. Jesus demonstrated us how to do as according to the will of the Father by total submission and obedience, obedience unto the point of death. Such is the faith Jesus had with the Father, such is the relationship of a son with the Father should be.

Luke 23:46 NIV

Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last.

Parables of Jesus - The Workers in the Vineyard - Matthew 20:1-16

Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard

Matthew 20:1-16

King James Version (KJV)
20 For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.
And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,
And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way.
Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.
And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?
They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.
So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.
And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.
10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.
11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,
12 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.
13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?
14 Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.
15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?
16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

This parable also speaks about God's unmerited favor and mercy. In the parable there were many labors called during the daytime to work in the vineyard, but when the wages were distributed, all were distributed equally. This created a confusion between the owner and the workers who started their work early in the morning.

This parable has some very valuable lessons:
1. God's Unmerited favor and mercy
2. God's view
3. God's Grace

1. God's Unmerited favor and mercy - It is said by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:10 NIV
But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them--yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.

The First workers who came to the vineyard should have had the attitude of that of Paul, to say that we worked harder then the rest, but still they are also eligible to get paid for whatever the owner chooses. We are happy with what we got, as we got as per the agreement.

2. God's view - The owner of the vineyard agreed with the labourers for a penny a day. Saw others standing idle in the marketplace, And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way.

First labourers were agreed for a penny a day, the rest of the labourers were also agreed for a pay that which the owner chooses - i.e. as the owner said "whatsoever is right I will give you".

In Matthew 9:37 NIV when Jesus spoke to his disciples about the kingdom of God.

Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.

3. God's Grace - The parable also suggests us as to what the attitude of the first workers was - with the owner and the fellow workers who came for the work at the later time. As they compared themselves with the other workers the problem of wage came into existence. They should have concentrated on their job. As the owner agreed to pay them a penny, and when they received their wage they should have been happy, but rather they compared themselves with others, may be they would have thought - they should also should have come at the later time in the day. But God has a different view - That's why he says -  Matthew 20:16 NIV
"So the last will be first, and the first will be last."

Jesus, The Cross, A Thief, and Forgiveness

There were two thieves with Jesus who were to be executed. One says “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”
But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”
42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[b]
43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

It did not take a long sermon to teach the other unbelieving thief - He just said  “Don’t you fear God,” and  “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” nor did he prayed a long prayer, but just asked Jesus to remember him in paradise - Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

Jesus did not rebuke them saying you are a thief nor did he say you deserve this punishment but not I. He said first “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” and then when this criminal asks to remember him in kingdom, Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

This account is found in the Luke 23:32-43

Luke 23:32-43

New International Version (NIV)
32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said,“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[a] And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”
36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”
38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.
39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”
40 But the other criminal rebuked him.
